Liberal Democrats Select Local Resident As Parliamentary Candidate For Esher & Walton

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 2nd Jan 2008

Local resident Sereena Davey has been selected as the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate to fight the next General Election in Esher and Walton.

In an area where Labour cannot win, the next general election will be a two-horse race between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives.

The first woman candidate in the Esher and Walton constituency since 1997, Sereena Davey will be looking to build upon the successes and achievements of neighbouring Liberal Democrat MPs Vince Cable and Ed Davey.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesman Sereena Davey said:

"I am delighted to have the chance to campaign for key issues in my local area and will reach out and listen to people's concerns. This is a fantastic area we live in, but the availability of good quality public services, the growing challenge of protecting our environment, and the lack of control residents feel they have over their everyday lives cannot be ignored.

Ensuring people have both power and responsibility is at the heart of everything we stand for as Liberal Democrats, and I will work hard to be accessible to everyone across Esher and Walton."

Commenting on Sereena's appointment, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg MP said:

"I am absolutely thrilled that Sereena has been selected. It is crucial for the long term success of the Liberal Democrats that more women become Members of Parliament. I know that the voters here will appreciate for themselves the remarkable qualities which make Sereena such a promising politician. She has a bright future ahead and I wish her the best of luck."
