We thank everyone who supported the Liberal Democrats in the recent elections for Surrey County Council. Across Surrey we achieved a net gain of 1 seat while the Conservatives had a net loss of 2 seats - including losing to the Residents right here in East Molesey and Esher.

Nationally the Liberal Democrats secured 28% of the vote, just 10 points behind the Conservative who saw their vote share fall from 44%, and above Labour who got a record low of just 23%.

These elections were understandably affected by the expenses scandal and this month our poll focuses on second homes for MPs. Local Lib Dems MPs (including Vince Cable and Ed Davey) do not claim for a second home, but commute like the rest of us. The same cannot be said for the Conservative MP for this constituency...

Despite the expenses debate, we fought locally on the issue that mattered - Conservative "mismanagement of Surrey". Road maintenance, school admissions and the shocking Audit Commission rating are all serious things, and you can rest assured Lib Dems in Elmbridge and across Surrey will hold the Conservatives to account.

Many of you reading this will have been impressed with our candidates and policies. Why not come and join us and help us to achieve REAL change locally and County wide. See the 'Get involved' or 'Contact us' sections on the left hand side.

We conduct regular polls of residents' opinions. Following the Audit Commission's grading of Surrey Council to just one star we ask if it is right for the Conservative administration to now be spending taxpayers money on contesting the decision in court rather than on fixing the problem.

Do take a moment to VOTE. Your opinion is important to us.

Fix Surrey County Council finances

Sat 23rd May 2009

Over the last four years, the Tories running Surrey County Council have provided poor services for residents, wasted millions of pounds of Council Taxpayers money and produced continual spin claiming that the council is "outstanding" when plainly it is not. The outcome of this sorry state of affairs is the demotion of the Council by the Audit Commission from a 4 Star council in 2005 to a 1 Star council in 2008.
